Default What have they done to Suikoden?!

Has anyone else played Suikoden IV? What happened? I know some people think that II is the greatest of the series, but at least III was still a good game and recognizable as a Suikoden title. I'm so dissapointed with IV. Like a fool, I bought it the other day without having read any reviews or rented it first, assuming that it would follow in the footsteps of those that came before. Instead, I got a criminally easy, dumbed down stock Japanese RPG with terrible voice acting and a mind-numbingly tedious sailing system (with random encounters every 4 or 5 seconds) in place of a normal world map. Even the legendary Suikoden music has been reduced to repetitive, forgettable, midi-quality garbage. I swear to God, I almost cried. I'm going to keep playing, to see if it gets any better, but I don't hold out much hope.

While I loved the 2nd Suikoden, I haven't played the 3rd one. I read that the 4th one wasn't that great, and even my friends told me that it wasn't up to par with the other 3. Hopefully, the next one, if they make one, will be better.

I played all four Suikodens and the second one is my favorite...they took everything good from the first one, slapped on a great plot and polished it to a mirror sheen (the translation wasn't good but oh well...).

I agree on the tedious sailing and random encounters (try to grab a Champion Rune, the random encounters won't be as bad, and recruit Viki so you can teleport everywhere without sailing, she's invaluable). The voice acting wasn't that bad IMO...

It's good that you're going to keep playing because the ending credits has this greaaaat musical piece that makes you forget all the bad things about the game. I enjoyed the game...but that's because I haven't played an RPG in a God long while.

Oh, and there's also a rumor that they're making a Suikoden V... Leaked info, hopefully it'll turn out better than IV.

Yeah that, and I also heard that they're trying to release it for the PS2 before the next-gen consoles come out.

Suikoden IV was... not so good. I liked the original PS incarnations of the series, so with that in mind, I was going to try my damndest to like this game as well. However, even noble intentions like that weren't enough to save it for me. The art design was just nothing near what it was in the previous Suikoden games. The main character might as well be called "Generic Guy" - as that's essentially all he is. His only distinguishing feature is his horrible, horrible pouty gremlin face. The animation was not so hot, either. It's really hard to overlook that Generic Guy looks like he has to use the bathroom badly whenever he walks or runs.

I might go back and finish the game someday, for the sake of being a completionist ... but there just isn't any urge for me to do that now. I stopped playing it in favor of the vastly superior Growlanser Generations, a game which is not only awesome, but guaranteed to make you the most popular person in your county, just for owning it.

I was actually lucky enough to be given a copy of Growlanser. I picked up Suikoden IV because I'm a big fan of the others (II in particular) and thought that a more traditional Japanese RPG from a respectable series might be fun to play alongside it. Whoops.
